THINK 5R.
Working Safely. Building Responsibly. Protecting Tomorrow.
At PT Bahtera Bahari Shipyard (BBS), we believe that an organised workplace is a safer, more efficient and more sustainable workplace.
Our 5R Programme provides a practical framework that encourages every employee, contractor and visitor to take responsibility for maintaining high standards across all shipyard operations. Implemented throughout our facilities, the programme supports workplace safety, operational efficiency and environmental stewardship while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
The principles of the 5Rs are embedded throughout our daily operations and reflect our commitment to responsible shipbuilding, sustainable business practices, and the wellbeing of our people, communities and environment.
Through the collective efforts of our workforce, we strive to create a culture where safety, organisation, resource efficiency and environmental responsibility are embedded in everything we do.
From the office to the shipyard – and beyond – the BBS 5R Programme empowers our entire community to take small actions that contribute to lasting positive change.
Because the actions we take today help protect tomorrow.
The 5Rs
REFUSE
Avoid unnecessary waste before it enters the workplace.
We encourage conscious purchasing decisions and seek to minimise unnecessary materials and single-use items wherever possible.
REDUCE
Use resources efficiently and minimise waste.
By optimising material usage, reducing excess consumption and improving operational efficiency, we minimise waste while enhancing productivity.
REUSE
Extend the life of materials and equipment.
Where practical and safe, materials, containers and equipment are reused to extend their life and reduce waste.
RECYCLE
Recover recyclable materials through segregation and responsible processing.
Waste streams are carefully separated to ensure recyclable materials are diverted from landfill and returned to appropriate recycling channels.
RECOVER
Restore, repair and regenerate wherever possible.
Materials that cannot be directly reused or recycled are managed responsibly, while continuous improvements help maintain a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation.
How 5R Works at BBS
At PT Bahtera Bahari Shipyard, 5R is supported by a structured waste management system designed to ensure materials are managed safely, efficiently and responsibly. Waste is separated at its source, collected by designated teams, transferred to the appropriate TPS or TPST facility, sorted by category, and then directed for reuse, recycling, recovery, authorised disposal or management licensed by third-parties.
Each department appoints a PJ 5R (5R Person in Charge) and an Officer 5R to support daily implementation, inspections, education and coordination. Together, they help ensure that 5R is not simply a campaign, but an integrated system embedded within our daily operations.
Our 5R Process
1
IDENTIFY & SEGREGATE
Waste is separated at its source according to category.
2
COLLECT & MONITOR
Designated teams collect and monitor waste throughout the shipyard.
3
TPS / TPST
Materials are transferred to the appropriate collection, storage or processing areas.
4
SORT & PROCESS
Materials are sorted for reuse, recycling, recovery or disposal.
5
REUSE | RECYCLE | RECOVER
6
AUTHORISED DISPOSAL
Waste Management System
An effective waste management system forms an important part of our 5R Programme, helping ensure that materials are properly segregated, recovered and managed in accordance with environmental and operational requirements.
To support responsible waste handling, clearly identified collection points are positioned throughout the shipyard, allowing waste to be segregated at source.
Waste Categories
GENERAL WASTE
Non-recyclable everyday waste generated from offices, workshops and communal areas.
ORGANIC WASTE
Biodegradable materials including food scraps, garden waste and other natural materials.
RECYCLABLES
Paper, cardboard, plastics, glass and other recyclable materials suitable for processing and recovery.
SCRAP METAL
Steel offcuts, pipe remnants, aluminium, copper wiring and other reusable metal scrap generated during shipbuilding activities.
HAZARDOUS WASTE (B3)
Hazardous materials requiring specialised handling and disposal, including oils, chemicals, paints, solvents, oils, batteries and contaminated materials.
All hazardous waste is managed in accordance with applicable regulations and environmental standards.
From Office to Shipyard and Beyond
Our commitment to the 5Rs extends across every aspect of our operations – from office spaces and workshops to production areas and communal facilities.
Some of our ongoing initiatives include:
- Onsite waste segregation and recycling.
- Reducing reliance on single-use plastics in communal areas and the company canteen.
- Encouraging the use of reusable drink bottles, containers and utensils.
- Maintaining dedicated scrap metal and hazardous waste management systems.
- Continuous workplace housekeeping and organisation.
- Promoting employee awareness and participation programmes.
We believe sustainability does not end when the workday finishes.
Through education, awareness campaigns and daily practice, we encourage our entire BBS community to embrace the principles of the 5Rs not only within the shipyard, but also at home and within their local communities.
By carrying these habits beyond the workplace, together we can create a positive and lasting impact for future generations.
Everyone Has a Role to Play
The success of the BBS 5R Programme depends on the commitment and participation of everyone across the shipyard.
Through awareness, training and daily actions, we aim to create:
- A safer workplace.
- A cleaner and more organised environment.
- Improved operational efficiency.
- Reduced environmental impact.
- A stronger culture of responsibility and pride.
At BBS, the 5R Programme is more than a waste management initiative. It reflects how we work every day – creating a safer workplace, reducing environmental impact and building a stronger future for our people, our community and the generations that follow.
